JANUARY NEWSLETTER

We kept busy and warm at Creative Kids Place in January!  It seems
the winter season served as our artistic inspiration this month.  We
made adorable snowman plaques by first staining a piece of wood with
watered down blue paint.  We talked about using shapes and lines to
compose a snowman and painted them onto our wood with acrylic paint.
Hope your child has hung his/her snowman up at home and it’s
brightening up the winter months for you!
Our next project was snowflake collages.  We used assorted snowflake
stamps and colors of paint to create a design on a big piece of paper.
Once these dried, we tore up pieces of tissue paper and used liquid
starch to decoupage the tissue over the painted snowflakes.  It gave a
nice texture to our collage and was fun to do!  The older class cut
snowflake designs out of many pieces of tissue paper and decoupaged
them onto a big sheet of blue paper, adding a bit of glitter for sparkle.
My favorite project this month was the winter landscapes.  We took a
walk outside and looked at the trees, plants, grass, and sky.  How did
they look?  What were the dominant colors of a winter landscape?  The
children in the older class were given canvases and palettes of paint to
create their own interpretation of a winter landscape.  In the younger
classes, we talked about the horizon line in our landscape and how we
could use shapes and lines to compose our winter landscape.  The
children created really beautiful paintings.
This past week we created foil sculptures.  I wanted the children to
have an easy and familiar thing to sculpt – so of course we finished out
the month with snowmen!  The children tore pieces of foil and crumpled
them gently, shaping them into three round balls.  Then – with close
supervision – they used the glue gun to assemble their foil pieces into a
snowman.  We mixed up white paint with a little glue and soap, and
dabbed this mixture onto our foil sculptures with a small paint brush.
It gave a really nice effect on the silver foil.  We added some pipe
cleaners for arms and voila!  A really neat little snowman sculpture!
We’ll finish out this session with some Valentine inspired art.  The next
session begins February 16.  Also look for summer camp information in
mid February.
